Love’s Sting

I had met him a couple of weeks ago and we started talking. We, both, knew this was something very special almost immediately. We shared tastes in geekdom, books and movies. He was returning to college after a few years out in the real world and I was floating through classes trying to find a muse or direction to guide me in the next chapter of my life.
We would meet almost every day and spend hours talking and walking every sidewalk on campus. He knew how I liked my coffee and I knew his food allergies. We knew what topics to skirt around and how to crack each other up with just a word or two.
This morning was chilly on campus. I was wearing my “Go State” sweatshirt and a long skirt with my Birkenstocks. I was in line to get my morning coffee when I saw him coming in. I saw someone next to him, chatting with him. He glowed as they talked. I asked my friend who she was, and she said, “Oh, That’s Lexi. She’s on the Soccer team.”
When he came in we kissed as we did every morning. I asked about Lexi and he told me that they had met the day before. He was the fanboy when it came to soccer and I saw his attraction to her, she was very pretty and athletic.
We got our coffee and talked for a bit until we had to part for classes. I hugged him tightly and whispered, “Is there a future for us?”
He said nothing, just holding me, but after a minute, I felt him shake his head slowly. I squeezed a little tighter, trying to hug a little more love out of him as my tears began flowing.
The loud buzzing caused me to open my eyes and look up into the darkness, realizing after a moment that it was the alarm on my phone - time to get up. I still love him, but now I see there really is no future for us.
